Few people understand bar design the way Tobin does. This book breaks the subject down in a way that’s accessible to complete beginners while still offering deep insight for seasoned professionals. It’s not just a manual — it’s a look under the hood at why great bar design works, connecting the dots between workflow efficiency, food safety, ergonomics, and the bottom line. -

Wish this book had come out a decade ago! Bars have always been the neglected piece of hospitality design, something that has always surprised me, as this is the most profitable area of any restaurant. Having a reference guide that takes into account efficiency, adjacency, production needs, health code, and construction requirements will be an invaluable tool to anyone looking to renovate or build a new bar that maximizes product quality, revenue, and the guest experience. I cannot wait to share this with my design team. -

If you are an architect with restaurant/bar clients, a contractor or a former bartender (I am all of the above) you cannot find a better design resource! I’ve read this book cover-to-cover, a couple of times. It’s a great read both technically and for the fantastic anecdotes from a master bartender and bar designer. Count me as a fan. -

The mike has been dropped. Hopefully this won’t be the last book ever written about intelligent bar design, but it certainly is the first, and whoa, how perfect is it. It covers the history, theory, practise and philosophy of designing bars that make bartenders faster, better, and literally healthier, which allows them to focus on commanding the room and delivering 100% focussed hospitality to their guests, while filling the cash register and delivering ROI on the bar build so many times over that following the advice he dispenses in this tome is like buying Bitcoin in 2002. Its also a beautiful book, with gorgeous photos and case studies, written in a self-deprecatingly funny way by Tobin, who has put in his 30,000 hours bartending and brought every second of that experience to bear on concepting and creating bars so ideal to work behind that bartenders who do literally stay in the industry for longer.

It’s rare to find a guide that balances high-end aesthetics with practical, bottom-line logic. Whether you’re a first-time owner or a seasoned developer, this is the blueprint for building a space that isn't just "cool," but actually works. This isn't just a design book; it’s a manual for better operations and higher margins. Highly recommended for anyone serious about the industry. Thank you Tobin Ellis for bringing this to life! -

It’s about time someone who actually knows how a bar should and does function to write a “guide” for others to design their bars! Not only does Tobin know these things he has lived them for years from every position! Take it from someone who has also been behind the bar for over 30 years that this book is a must read for ANYONE designing a bar. Bar Design is also a vital tool for those people already owning, operating or working in a bar already if they are looking to improve, streamline or enhance their business. Whether you are new to the business or a seasoned veteran this book is Essential for making your bar the best it can be!! -

Before I opened my bars we talked about function over form ad nauseum, but without a specific gameplay for that…this is essential reading and resource for anyone interested in opening a bar, redesigning a bar, building one in your home etc. excellent.
